Welcome to the Department of Economics. The Department began in 2019, the same year, the University commenced its official operations. The B.Sc. Economics programme run by the department has been approved by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC). The areas of specialization include Monetary Economics, International Economics, Labour Economics, Energy Economics, Development Economics, and Financial Economics amongst others. The curriculum for the programme of study is circumspectly structured to provide an in-depth training and to lay a firm foundation to the fundamental principles of economics. This is complimented with a plethora of electives courses that allow students to apply their training in the different areas of specialization.
Philosophy:
To produce graduates equipped with critical skills and abilities to reason both deductively and inductively; assimilate structure and analyse qualitative and quantitative data; communicate concisely the results; think critically about the limits of one’s analysis in a broader socio-economic context; and draw economic policy inferences for the benefits of humanity
Objectives
- Provide training in the principles of economics.;
- Stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its application to a range of problems and its relevance in a variety of contexts.;
- Provide a firm foundation of knowledge about the workings of an economy and to develop the relevant skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in a range of settings.;
- Develop in students the ability to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and skills acquired to the solution of societies’ economic problems.;
- Equip students with appropriate tools of analysis to tackle issues and problems of economic policy.;
- Develop in students a range of transferable skills that will be of value in employment and self-employment.;
- Provide students with analytical skills and the ability to develop simplified frameworks for studying the real world.;
- Provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed to postgraduate studies in economics and related fields. ;
- Generate in students an appreciation of the economic dimensions of wider social and political issues.
UTME
Candidates must have obtained 5 credits at not more than 2 sittings in 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two subjects in Commerce, Government, Financial Accounting or Geography at SSCE or GCE Ordinary Level and or any other acceptable O’Level results. In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME
DIRECT ENTRY
Candidates for Direct Entry must meet the UTME admission requirements in addition to A’level passes in three relevant subjects or recognised diploma certificate from a recognised tertiary institution in Nigeria or abroad. JUPEB candidates with relevant grades may also be considered. Such candidates are to be admitted into 200 level of the programme. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Economics are Compulsory.
